In this session, we will explore key forms that game-based learning can take, and reflect on its potentialities and limitations to foster meaningful and complex learning. As a case study, we will consider the alternate reality game genre. Exemplar games will be explored in order to illustrate the educational potential of this genre. The examples will also demonstrate how “deep game-based learning experiences” can be generated based on simple technologies and ingenious design, and without the need for complex technological know-how, tools and budgets typically required to create high-end digital games.
